Abhijit Dey
Professor
About-
My laboratory is currently working on the therapeutic application of plant natural products on the three most deadly diseases viz. neurological and psychological disorders, cancer and diabetes. We are primarily in search of natural products and templates with ameliorative principles against these life-threatening ailments either linked to genetics and/or lifestyle. In addition, we are engaged in interpreting the possible role of plant natural products against the cause, complications and side effects of the above-mentioned diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, substance abuse, obesity etc. Of late, we have also started to decipher the intrinsic molecular mechanisms, signal transduction pathways etc. in relation to disease pathogenesis for proper elucidation of drug targets, druggability and bioavailability. Besides, our ongoing research interest also deals with the plant-based antivirals and plant-derived toxins.
Being a frequent visitor to the Himalayas, I always have a special affinity to the north east Himalaya and I have always tried to expand this inclination into a scientific endeavour through a truly interdisciplinary research approach. Our study involves many domains of science such as phytochemistry, chemotaxonomy, molecular biology, plant biotechnology, mathematical modelling, process optimization, ecology and biodiversity, stress physiology, network pharmacology, molecular docking and bioinformatics. We are actively engaged in medicinal plant and natural product research using chemotaxonomy and molecular biology to characterize promising germplasm, biotechnological tools for generating in vitro plant materials for elicitation of secondary metabolites, isolation, purification and characterization of plant natural products using HPLC, HPTLC, GC-MS, NMR etc., molecular characterization of endophytes associated with natural products, bioinformatics tools for deciphering the potential phytochemicals against pathogens and diseases, mathematical modelling and process optimization in extraction of valuable natural products and last but not the least the field inventorization, taxonomy and identification of medicinal plants and their diversity.
My teaching areas include Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Phycology, Bryology, Gymnology, Economic Botany, Plant Groups, Bioethics, Pharmacology and Embryology for the past 15 years at UG as well as at PG levels.
