Assistant Professor
About-
As an academic I am interested not only in teaching but also in pursuing research activities. Within the broader field of Environmental Geography, my research specializes on the issue and impact of development activities on environmental sustainability, conservation and management of water resources in metropolitan cities, preservation and sustainable development of wetlands. I would like to continue my research further on the prospects of sustainable development of wetlands in West Bengal. The present scenario in West Bengal is such that preservation of wetlands, without involving the local community who depend on the wetlands for their livelihood, is not possible. Therefore wise use of wetlands is essential for their sustainable utilization for the benefit of mankind as well as for the preservation of the natural properties of the wetland ecosystem. Further, I am interested in exploring the possibilities of utilizing the wetlands for rain-water harvesting so that the same may be used also for development of irrigation facilities in agriculture, besides demonstrating the utility of wetlands in controlling air-pollution since they act as a ‘Carbon Sink’. This requires the formulation of integrated management plans covering all aspects of the wetlands and their relationships with their catchments.
My teaching interests include courses on Biogeography, Economic Geography, Population and Settlement Geography, Environmental Geography and Contemporary Issues in Geography. As a teacher, I believe in imparting such training to my students as will create in them the quest for knowledge so that they are inspired to work using that knowledge both for their own benefit as well as for the benefit of the larger society.
