Department of History

The research programme in the Department of History consists of both full-time and part-time students. Currently, the department has a total enrolment of 20 PhD students, with 16 registered and 4 enrolled students. The curricula of the Department aligned with its academic vision aim to cultivate critical and innovative thinking and impart training required to carry out the highest level of multi-disciplinary research.

The PhD Coursework is a mandatory part of the PhD curriculum and is expected to be completed within the first year of enrolment, the latest within the first TWO years of enrolment into the PhD programme. The PhD coursework is 16 credits and is taught and evaluated over two semesters. The course consists of 5 papers, of which three are mandatory sessional papers and two non-sessional papers. All papers will mandatorily be studied by all students enrolled in the coursework. In the Odd semester, they will be offered two compulsory taught courses that are Research Methodology: Approaches to the Practice of History and Research and Publication Ethics (RPE) and any one paper from the Elective pool. In the Even semester, PhD candidates will be offered another compulsory course in research methods entitled Research Methodology: Reading Texts in History and any one paper from the Elective pool. All Elective courses offered are research centric and customized according to the research requirement of each scholar and also subject to the availability of course instructors in any given semester.

The evaluation of all sessional papers will be based on continuous evaluations held throughout the course as well as end-semester examinations. Continuous evaluations will consist of combinations of assignments, write-ups, group discussions, and presentations taken by multiple teachers involved in the course. All written assignments which will be submitted for evaluation will be checked with the standard plagiarism software and the standard plagiarism policy of the department will apply. The non-sessional papers will be assessed on the same method mentioned above.

The student needs to score a minimum CGPA of 6.00 in the coursework to continue in the PhD program. Moreover, he/she needs to score a minimum of B grade (55 to < 60 percent marks) in each course. After successful completion of PhD coursework examination, the student may apply for registration in the prescribed form issued by the university latest by six months from the date of issue of the coursework completion certificate or coursework exemption certificate. If the Doctorate Committee accepts the application of the candidate for registration after a pre-registration seminar conducted by the Departmental PhD Committee then she/he shall have to register her/his name within one month from the date on which the decision of the Committee is communicated to her/him.

PhD Coursework may be exempted for the PhD scholars as defined in the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of MPhil./PhD Degrees) Regulations, 2016. PhD Regulations 2019 .
